A 1971 ICONIC HOME RENEWED

A 1971 ICONIC HOME RENEWED

Completed in 1971, Tomich House stands as one of Iwan Iwanoff’s most distinctive works. An intricate façade of curved elements, arced walls radiating from a central cylindrical core, and a character entirely its own. Over the decades that followed, a series of alterations and a significant three-level extension in 1986 gradually departed from the architect’s original vision, and the house, along with its garden, fell into disrepair.

When a new owner purchased the property, a comprehensive restoration was undertaken. Our role was to bring the landscape back, not as it had been, but as it should have been. There is no established precedent for restoring an Iwanoff garden. Instead, we immersed ourselves in his body of work, using the architecture itself as the guide. The paired-back material palette allows the architecture to breathe, referencing the coastal setting and connecting seamlessly with the interior finishes.
